| Q: Where do I store my cigars? |
| A: Cigars must be stored in a properly humidified environment. The correct environment should 18 to 20 degrees celcius and anywhere between 70 and 75% humidity. Please note each country will slightly vary, but this is the norm. Avoid large and or rapid fluctuations in both tempature and humidity. An ideal place to store is in a wooden cigar humidor, preferably in either Spanish Cedar or kiln dried Mahogany. NEVER BUY PINE BOXES/HUMIDORS, THIS IS A NO NO! Never ever store cigars in a fridge or freezer as this will dry cigars of any moisture. Also keep them away from direct heat and sunlight. |
| Q: What is that white powder on the wrapper of my cigars? |
| A: If you notice powder on your cigars in a whitish colour fear not as this is what the industry calls Bloom or Plume, a natural occurence caused by the cigars sweating off some of the natural oils that are inherent to tobacco. Can also be a good sign of aged cigars. Just wipe off the bloom prior to smoking. |
| Q: Some of my cigars have developed holes in my humidor. And there are little beetles crawling around. What should I do? |
| A: This is a serious issue of tobacco beetle infestation. A devastating problem found in humidors because they can quickly decimate a cigar supply and are difficult to combat. Beetle larvae are microscopic and occur naturally in tobacco, and despite the quality control efforts of manufacturers, are frequently in cigars that make it to market. Once the temperature reaches 72 degrees, the beetles can hatch; they crawl through the cigars, creating those small holes that can ruin any good cigar. Be very vigilant in checking your humidor often. Particularly in Summer. Beetle larvae can be killed by freezing the cigars. Put them in your freezer for three days, then into the fridge for two days then slowly acclimate them to rehumidification, lest the wrappers on these cigars crack. This is not a hurried affair, they are your babies so take care. |
| Q: I have blue/green powder on my cigars, is this bloom? |
| A: No, a blue/green powder is not bloom this is in fact mould. Mould is frequently caused by high temperature and humidity levels, so keeping your humidor near optimal 70/70 mark will avoid this problem. Make sure you are using demineralised water to eliviate any further mould problems. |
| Q: The cigars I buy are square in shape. Is this ok, and are there any advantages to these over round cigars? |
A: These are called box-pressed cigars, and yes they are ok. In fact this is traditionally the way cigars were manufactured in the early to late 18th to 19th Century. Box pressing is these days is in vogue. It is a stylistic decision, and it neither makes a cigar better nor worse than a round cigar. Lots of people in the 21st century favor the feel of a box-pressed cigars. But it is an aesthetic decision as to whether you prefer this style of cigar. Box pressing says nothing about the quality of the cigar, nor of the person who smokes it. |
| Q: What is the best way for me to age my cigars? |
A: Many collectors choose to age their cigars in boxes. Its a good idea to age cigars at a slightly lower temperature and humidity level than normal, and then to move the aged smokes to a desktop humidor when your ready to light them up. Many cigar brands, especially Cuban brands, are available in cabinet boxes, where the cigars are banded together with a ribbon in a format that makes them ideal for ageing and long-term storage. While ageing boxed cigars is acceptable, these cabinet-packed cigars make even more attractive aging candidates. Aged cigars frequently command higher prices in-store and at auctions. |
| Q: Why is there new petit robustos coming out on the market? |
| A: Cuba and other nations have decided that with time these day being a major factor there is an increasing demand to have smaller less time consuming cigars. Hence the new debut of sizes like the Montecristo Petit Edmundo and Hoyo De Monterrey Petit Robusto from Cuba. Cuba can now use more of the tobacco primings rather than discarding like they have done in previous years before. They can blend the cigar more and therefore the taste is also improved. |
| Q: What does 8-9-8 mean? |
| A: 8-9-8 is the way in which a box of cigars is packed. 8 cigars on the bottom, 9 cigars on top then 8 cigars again making 25 cigars to the box. ie: Partagas 8-9-8 Varnished
